23. SEPTEMBER – FANTASTISK JAZZ MED THOMAS FONNESBÆK & CLARICE ASSAD
BY ANJA YOO ANDERSEN 9 MONTHS AGO

Hun har optrådt bl.a. i Jazz at Lincoln Center i New York, Caramoor International Jazz Festival, Carnegie hall, The Metropolitan Museum of Art og Concertgebow i Amsterdam.

ABOUT THE PIECE

Z sonata is a four movement work inspired by the pulp fiction character ZORRO, created by Johnston McCully in 1919.  Don Diego de La Vega, the man behind the mask, was a Californian nobleman of Spanish descendence. Preoccupied with social inequalities, he felt torn between the harsh differences between the rich and the poor, and eventually became "Zorro":  Hero of the people, a fox-like creature and sword master who fought for the rights of the less privileged, often publicly humiliating their opressors.

The piece begins exploring Don Diego de La Vega's duality.  His lavish lifestlye as a nobleman clash with his obsessive thoughts about helping others.  In this movement, the man fantasizes about becoming Zorro, but does not become it.  This is the most romantic movement, aiming to  evoke the lyricism of the early Romantic period in which Zorro existed.   During this time, the 1820-40's, California was under Mexican rule.

The second and third movement revolve around his love interest, Lolita Pulido, whom he meets during a dance in a costume party dressed as Zorro.  The music borrows an exotic soundscape, reminiscent of Mexico and Spain, as the two embark on a clumsy pas de deux.   A beautiful lady of noble descent,  Lolita Polido is immediately taken by Zorro's misteriousness and charming personality, falling in love with the character, rather than the man himself.   This helps Diego de La Vega's mind in fully embracing his new identity.

The fourth and final movement explores Zorro's adventures in his fully formed persona -  a character who has been of great inspiration to artists of all mediums: visual artists, writers, film makers, actors and musicians throughout several generations.

ABOUT THE ENSEMBLE

The Mimesis Ensemble is a New York City based ensemble dedicated to the mastery of music from the 20th and 21st centuries. Founded in 2008 by pianist Katie Reimer, Mimesis performs regularly at venues such as Weill and Zankel Halls at Carnegie Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, Symphony Space, the Miller Theatre at Columbia University, and the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. They have performed by invitation at the New England Conservatory of Music, and Northeastern University. The group has received financial support for their concerts from the Consulate General of Finland, and the Consulate General of the Arab Republic of Egypt.

Mimesis released their debut CD on Bridge Records in their 5th season, featuring Mohammed Fairouz’s opera, Sumeida’s Song, for orchestra and 4 singers. They worked with Grammy award winning producer David Starobin on this project, and were conducted by Scott Dunn, the Associate Conductor of the LA Philharmonic’s Hollywood Bowl Orchestra.

Opera News selected their debut CD for their Dazzling Dozen best releases of 2013, calling the Mimesis Ensemble’s performance ‘very impressive.’ Vivien Schweitzer from the New York Times lauded their ‘appealing program’ in 2012, and Sherri Rase from Qonstage called the group ‘brilliant.’

Fostering close relationships with the composers they program, musicians are often coached and/or conducted by the composers themselves. The ensemble has worked with, and programmed music by Thomas Ades, Martin Bresnick, Caleb Burhans, Patrick Burke, Anna Clyne, Richard Danielpour, Alexandra du Bois, Halim El-Dabh, Mohammed Fairouz, Osvaldo Golijov, Judd Greenstein, John Heiss, Gabriel Kahane, David Lang, David T. Little, David Ludwig, Nico Muhly, Malcolm Peyton, Tobias Picker, Paola Prestini, Ned Rorem, Daniel Bernard Roumain, Huang Ruo, Kaija Saariaho, Gunther Schuller, Sarah Kirkland Snider, and Yehudi Wyner.
