Bonecos de Olinda, composed in 2019 and commissioned by the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra, is being performed by the Seven Lakes Orchestras, who won the state championship in July 2019 through Texas Music Educators Association. The ensemble was also recognized as a National Winner from the Foundation of Music Education. Conductor Desiree Overreee has programmed Bonecos de Olinda on three occasions, to cap off this exciting program, intentionally selected because it sounds like a celebration: 2020 is TMEA’s (Texas Music Educator’s Association’s) 100th anniversary. On this occasion, Clarice Assad is also the first female composer whose music has been performed by any of the symphony orchestras since the 100-year inception.
