For Two Guitars
Commissioned by the Kossler Duo
Few musical forms capture the imaginations of composers and performers alike, like the Praeludium and fugue. While the Praeludium allows for greater expressive freedom, the fugue requires careful thought and precision. This piece, for two guitars, takes the liberty of the Praeludium a step further by allowing the performers to choose sections to create the composition they desire. Each section, labeled as ‘blocks’ of ideas, is juxtaposed as in a puzzle and features engaging rhythmic combinations that make intricate, exciting polyrhythm effects. In contrast, the fugue is a subtle endeavor to construct a simple counterpoint architecture, breaking with the mold of complexity associated with it.
